Food

Born in Sasebo, lemon steak is a Japanese take on the American style of steak that became popular in the area due to the presence of the U.S. Navy base. After grilling the thinly sliced easy-to-eat pieces of steak on a griddle, you dip them in a soy sauce-based steak sauce that contains lemon juice.

In Sasebo, where the steak is eaten with a bowl of white rice, Japan’s staple food, many people like to finish their meal by pouring the leftover sauce on their rice. There are many steak houses, restaurants and izakaya (Japanese style pubs) in Sasebo that serve lemon steak, each putting their own unique twist on the sauce or the thickness of the cuts.
